Abstract

Zinc is a component of metalloenzymes that regulates metabolic reactions in the human body. It is an essential mineral found in almost every cell. Zinc stimulates the activity of approximately 100 enzymes and is needed for promotion of numerous biochemical reactions in the human body. Zinc deficiency most often occurs when dietary zinc intake is inadequate or when the element is poorly absorbed; when there are increased losses of zinc from the body; or when the body¡¯s requirement for zinc increases. Zinc deficiency in adults has been reported in a few patients with alcohol intoxication, liver cirrhosis, pancreatitis, Billroth II resection, and anorexia. We report a patient who was diagnosed with Kwashiorkor-like zinc deficiency after pancreaticoduodenectomy with subtotal gastrectomy. (Korean J Med 74:S217-S221, 2008)
